The Dor L'Dor Israel Program is a combined program of the Eli & Bessie Cohen Camps. It is recognized in Israel, the Jewish camping community, and throughout the United States as a unique and innovative leadership development experience. Current campers who have completed the 10th grade are eligible to experience a memorable 4-week tour of Israel.
Under the direction of the Eli and Bessie Cohen Camps President, the Director leads and promotes the Dor L’Dor program. The Director works collaboratively with the Directors of Camps Pembroke, Tel Noar and Tevya, and the Director of the Kadima Leadership program in achieving the program’s goals. The Director manages all functional areas of the program: sustaining the curriculum; mentoring and guiding program participants; meetings with teens and their parents; hiring, training and mentoring staff; and working in partnership with our Israeli counterpart on program details and training of Israeli staff.
The position is full-time June to August, and part-time the rest of the year, with increasing hours required as the trip gets nearer. The pre-trip time is spent in the Wellesley, MA offices collaborating with the Cohen Camps Directors, our partner organization in Israel, and the year-round staff to prepare for the upcoming summer. The Director spends summers traveling between Israel, the three Cohen Camps and working out of the Cohen Camps’ offices.
General Qualifications/Requirements:
• Bachelor’s degree in Education, Psychology, Social Work, Jewish Studies, or related field. Master’s degree preferred.
• Proven experiences in leadership or supervisory roles with teenage children, preferably in an experiential informal education setting, and their parents. Previous experience in Jewish overnight camp is highly desirable.
• Passion for Jewish overnight camping and Israel education.
• Expertise in developing and leading experiential education experiences, and integration with contemporary research on Jewish teen leadership training.
• Proven record developing personal connections with and mentoring teens.
• Adaptability to work independently, to integrate as a team-player, and to collaborate in an international partnership.
• Proficiency in creating and implementing youth leadership development programs focused on Jewish identity, Israel education, and community service.
• First-hand knowledge of Israeli culture, history, politics, and geography.
• Effective organizational, communication, and facilitation skills with a diverse group: teens, parents and staff.
• Manage confidential and proprietary information with discretion.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Basic computer/Internet skills including Word, Excel, and social media applications.
• Flexibility to work nights, weekends during the year, including travel to Israel for consecutive weeks over the summer, and travel to conferences for professional development.
• Physical requirements include mobility to participate in rustic setting including hikes, stairs, and carry boxes up to 30lbs.
